A screw is simply an inclined plane wrapped around in a spiral style. It is actually a combination of 2 simple machines: The inclined plane and the wedge, as the edges of the screw dig in to the material, fixing it in place (which is what a wedge does).
In VCE Systems Engineering there are only 2 useful properties of a screw:
- Shank: This is the length of the ‘screwable’ part of the screw, so not including the head (which is where the screwdriver slots in).
- Pitch: This is the distance between the threads (spiral ridges) along the screw.
